Why do pelicans have large beaks?
Pelicans are birds and they have beaks because their ancestors had beaks. there is a certain theory that suggests that ancestors of pelicans actually inherited their large beaks from an ancient species of fish that had the same adaptation.
But then, why do fish have large beaks?
Well, according to another theory, the large beaks evolved to defend against predators. It seems quite absurd though. Consider this: if they evolved to defend against predators, how on Earth would beaks defend themselves before they evolved?
The truth of the matter is that nobody knows the exact origin of the pelican's large beaks.
